Budweiser Flambe? Home Brewery Bursts Into Flames

Investigators in St. Petersburg say an elaborate operation for making beer at home caught fire when an electrical cord short-circuited. They are still trying to locate the tenant.

ST. PETERSBURG – An elaborate home-based beer-making operation shortciruited Monday, causing a fire at the Crosswinds Colony condominiums on 29th Avenue North.

No one was home when the fire started, said investigators, who were still trying to locate the tenant Monday afternoon.

Investigators say they found "an elaborate homemade system for brewing beer" inside the condominium unit where the fire broke out. It included a 15-gallon holding tank and a pressure switch device.

The say the fire started when a 220-volt electrical cord that powered the operation short-circuited.

The fire occurred after 1 p.m. Monday on the second floor of the condominium building. St. Pete firefighters had discovered the unit locked, with smoke billowing outside.

Firefighters broke through the front door and quickly extinguished the fire.

No charges will be filed in the incident.
